Choosing The Right Portable Sprinkler For Your Landscape

Posted on

Water is essential for achieving a lush green lawn that your neighbors will envy. Since you can't rely on rain to supply enough water during a summertime dry spell, you'll need to install a good portable sprinkler system. The best sprinkler for your grass depends on your particular landscape.

Portable Stationary Sprinkler

A stationary sprinkler stays in one place and has no moving parts. Although this is probably the simplest and least expensive sprinkler on the market, keep in mind it has a limited watering radius. It also tends to water the grass unevenly because the area closest to it receives less water than the grass around the outer perimeter of its watering radius.

This type of sprinkler is best for small areas.

Portable Oscillating Sprinkler

An oscillating sprinkler has an arm that moves back and forth, spraying water up into the air. Since the center of its watering radius usually gets the most water, some styles are designed with an oscillating arm that pauses at the end of each swing so the outer perimeter receives extra water. Otherwise, most of the water ends up landing near the center.

This sprinkler works best on a rectangular-shaped lawn of standard size. It isn't recommended for areas with trees or shrubs nearby because they can interfere with its water distribution.

Portable Revolving Sprinkler

This type of sprinkler has rotating arms that shoot water in a circular pattern close to the ground. Since the majority of water lands closest to the sprinkler base, you may need to move it around your yard to maintain even water distribution.

A revolving sprinkler works best on small lawns that don't have runoff issues.

Portable Traveling Sprinkler

A traveling sprinkler does exactly as its name suggests. It travels across your yard, evening dispersing water along the way. The head of this sprinkler moves along a track using water pressure as its power.

A traveling sprinkler works well on a large lawn, as long as it doesn't have a slope. It isn't recommended for muddy areas because the traveling wheels can get mired in the mud.

Portable Impact Sprinkler

This sprinkler has an arm that distributes water evenly across your yard. Water shoots out of its revolving head and is dispersed low to the ground in a circular pattern.

Portable sprinklers work well in almost any landscape.

No matter how your landscape is structured, there is a portable sprinkler on the market that can accommodate your needs. If in doubt, your best bet is to describe your property to a landscape professional like Krupske Sprinkler Systems and ask for recommendations.
