Replace Unsightly Broken Tile In Your Bathroom Quickly And Easily

Posted on

Having broken tiles in your bathroom can create an eyesore that can ruin the entire look of your bathroom. Removing and replacing damaged tiles is not overly difficult to do. The following guide walks you through the process of easily replacing damaged tile in your bathroom on your own.

Remove the Grout Around the Tile

Grout is the white material found between the tiles that keeps them properly spaced apart. The grout needs to be removed around the tile so that you can easily pop the tile from the wall. To remove the grout, simply use the blade of a utility knife to scrape the grout from the wall.

Break Apart the Tile

In order to remove the tile as easily from the wall as possible, you need to break it into more manageable pieces. Hold a chisel at the center of the tile and use a hammer to hit the end of the chisel so that it breaks the tile. You need to hold the end of the chisel firmly against the tile so that it does not slide off of the surface when you hit it with the hammer.

Remove the Broken Tile

Place the utility knife on the edge of the tile and press it under the tile to pop each piece loose from the wall. Repeat the process until all of the pieces are removed. The tile will be held to the wall by adhesive, and it will be easier to pop off small pieces rather than large pieces because there is less surface area stuck to the wall.

Clean the Wall

Use a putty knife to remove any leftover adhesive that is stuck to the wall to ensure that the surface is as smooth as it can be. You want to be sure that the surface is smooth so that you can adhere the new tile flat against the wall.

Adhere the New Tile

Spread tile adhesive onto the back of the replacement tile. Place the tile in the opening of the hole and twist it back and forth slightly to ensure that the tile is snug against the wall. Place tile spacers between the new tile and the old tiles to ensure that it is properly spaced. Use tape to hold the tile in place and allow the adhesive to dry overnight.

Add Grout around the Tile

Once the adhesive has dried, remove the tape and the spacers. Spread grout over the tile with a sponge and then wipe away all excess grout with a clean towel.

Once you have replaced the broken tile, the eyesore should be removed and improve the overall look of the space. The entire process takes a very short period of time and is easy enough for you to do on your own. But if you'd rather leave the work to the professionals, you can contact a local tile installation company like Art Tile Co. Inc.
